I based this rather abstract, loose painting on a photograph I snapped in Nuevo Progresso, Mexico, several years ago. I was struck by the irony of the U.S Pharmacy sign. Additionally, I was awed by the jumble of people and carts at this street corner as well as the lights from the shop signs at dusky dark. I've always wanted to paint this scene, and it's crying for a large (30 x 40) canvas. But this little study is only 11 x 14. I omitted some of the people, but I knew I had to keep the massive buildings, the U.S Pharmacy sign, the little girl holding the hand of the older man, the street vendor's cart, the 50-gallon barrel of trash, and the young woman in her ruffled dress and high heels. I may do this again on a larger canvas.
